A Miracle for the Emperor!

VATICAN CITY (AP) - The Vatican on Saturday attributed a miracle to the last emperor of Austria-Hungary, paving the way for the eventual beatification and sainthood of Charles I.

Pope John Paul II presided over the ceremony, which was attended by some of Charles' heirs. Beatification requires evidence of a miracle after the person's death and is the last formal step before possible sainthood.

At the end of this dotard's papacy, we in the Catholic communion are really becoming a spectacle to the world! If you want to know what this element of European society was really like, in their attitudes toward the whole rest of the world, read Proust. And, as far as this Pope--who promised, at the beginning of his reign, to retire once he got this old--I am reminded of what John Henry Newman said, of Pius IX: "The spectacle of an octagenarian pope is an obscenity."

When one of your loyal officers names his child after you, you will have an inside track when the kid becomes Pope.

The Orthodox are even quicker to canonize. Unless I am mistaken, St. John of Shanghai was still Archbishop of San Fransisco (ROCA) when I was in college.

These are two guys I happen to like. Very much, in fact.

But Escriva? Pio Nono?

The Tsar?
