am I remembering that weakland was
a bishop who had what he went so far
as to regard as imprudent relationships
and was perhaps, within that deployment
of the problematics, a squealee?
or perhaps I am confusing a name...

Who had to pay up a pretty penny of what he said was not church money. (More than you are getting for your house, I seem to recall.)

Now he has published something in Commonweal, calling forth the somewhat indignant response in the New Oxford Review I linked to.

I was not pleased when some folks took such pleasure in the scandal because he had been the chief architect of the new Mass, but I must admit that he is not in a very good position at present to denounce the heirarchy.

The article quotes Archbishop Timothy Dolan as saying that there's a difference between forgiveness and permissiveness. While I agree with him and with his practical application of that idea--don't let pedophiles keep on with a ministry that offers them more temptations--in New Testament Greek, there *is* no difference. Aphesis can be translated forgiveness, permissions, sufferance; the word in the Lord's Prayer which we translate "forgive" is aphete, and we might just as well render it "allow" or "permit" us our sins/trespasses.

Lead us not into temptation, the sacred text continues, which can be read as a call for rescue from permissiveness.

Or, as more recent versions render it, "Save us from the time of trial," whatever that means. *g*

Or, Do not put us to the test. There may be an eschatoligical sense, as you imply, but I think a more comprehensive meaning is intended.

Eschatological.

Aren't these the same priests who are supposed to teach their parishoners that sex is only acceptable for the purposes of marital procreation? But now it is somehow wrong for teenaged boys who have been abused by them to "squeal"?
