Back

Many, many thanks to you who sent your affectionate St. Ephrem's Day greetings. It was, I am sorry, if mildly amused, to report, a spectacularly, almost a ludicrously depressing day, in which I was not nearly as depressed as I might have been, and, some would say, ought to have been. I salvaged it by reading myself to sleep with five stories by Wendell Berry in a collection called Fidelity which are as fine as anything he has written, and which you really ought to read for yourselves. The next day headed out for the Stamford Sheraton for the annual Cutco banquet, where the Kid was singled out for several distinctions, which pleased me, as does the evidence that she has a new sense of dedication to the knife business. The hotel's TV system seems to be dish based, and presented me with two ads I hadn't seen before, one for a KY jelly that warms up when you rub it, free samples on the website -- this I knew about, of course, as an Adult Education instructor who had to sit through, with his students, the mandated AIDS workshops devised by local Lesbian activists -- so that when I bought a set of practice teeth from the NYU dental school for my wife's brother's daughter in India to drill on, I knew what they had in mind when they presented me with a dental dam as a free gift. (Don't ask.) (Don't tell, either.) The other ad? On the joys of alpaca farming. Now that the bottom has dropped out of the ostrich market.

Cheers, all.

I need to read Berry; my roommate saw him read/speak recently, and said his storytelling and speaking presence kind of reminded him of me.

All the more reason to read him -- just to get some idea of what high praise that is.

According to the roommate, there's something indisputably Kentuckian about us both. My storyteller side doesn't show on LJ, so perhaps this audience could not tell me if this is true.

Back from the Nutmeg State.

St. Ephrem in the East, St. Thomas Aquinas in the West.

Still not sure about Saturday.

Still wrapping up the job I have, blocking out several more writing projects in my mind.

I think we will also do a house blessing
at Jim Nicholl's new digs, perhaps saturday
the 19th? if that is it first of all works
for him...
But do hope we might see you on the 5th
if nothing else fr Dave I guess could use some
bucking up.

St Ephraim is a doctor of the western church
but I am afraid St Thomas is not a doctor
("theologian" I suppose to correspond) in
the east...
my auto insurance after accident last summer
has gone from 5000 a year to 2700 a year
by the simple expedient of shifting from
Hartford to Progressive which I likely would
not have done without the accident. so
if you have anything insured take a look at
the comparative prices I guess is rule...
Good writing days to you!
yours
+Seraphim

Well the good doctor is my doctor, besides being a distant cousin in all probability, and having the same birthday. It would be nice to see Fr. D., of course, but the rest of the crew as well. I will make a point of catching him in town if I don't make it up there.

I think I am expected in Poughkeepsie for President's Weekend, at the home of an former friend's ex wife - Janice, who was at the Sufi bookstore for your reading.

Cheers.

Well, that post just woke me up this morning! *grin*

Was it the alpacas, the dental dams, or the hotel full of college kids with knives?

[identity profile] arisbe.livejournal.com 2005-01-31 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Well I don't have an alpaca and don't remember where I put the dental dam, but my college kid would be more than happy to deomonstrate the knives to you and Greg. That's what she does. And I get the impression that you are not too far from Hunter, where she attends.

I hope you did have a great birthday.

Do an internet search on Vector Marketing or Cutco, you'll see it's pretty well known for being a scam.
