Deputy Tripp apparently didn’t like being told “No” by Nick, so he manufactured a criminal theft complaint against Nick for theft of a chicken no one claimed ownership of. Tripp kicked a judge out of bed at midnight and got the bleary-eyed judge to sign a defective search warrant. Nick was dragged out of bed in his red Speedo underwear at 1:00 AM by deputies driving four patrol vehicles, arrested, and the chicken was returned to the store parking lot.

Most of the prisoners were never told of the charges against them, never knew who their accusers were, when asked about their authority to arrest, there was none, no trials except occasionally a prisoner would be brought in front of a "military commission" which was, of course, illegal. They were imprisoned without knowing what they had done wrong, and when they were eventually released months or years later, they still did not know.

The feeling or thought that I recall striking me most was that possibly killing a baby did not bother me and I could not understand why it didn’t. Killing adult enemy personnel was one thing, but killing a baby was not something we were prepared for. By an unspoken agreement the team never talked about the baby.
