New Sweden?
Few folks realize that, as I was saing to
joffridus, parts of Southwest New Jersey, Southeast Pennsylvania, Delaware, and even part of Maryland were a colony of Sweden from 1638 to 1655, and an internally autonomous "Swedish Nation" under Dutch rule from 1655 up to the arrival of William Penn in 1681.

I am, I realize more and more, very much a child of the Middle Colonies, born in Philadelphia and educated by Quakers, though in the Midwest, grown up in New Jersey, and a New Yorker now for more than half my life -- of course much of the life of New Jersey in my boyhood was oriented toward New York, though less so than at present.
I guess I have stopped thinking of myself as a Hoosier on the basis of my four undergraduate years in Richmond, though they were a uniquely vivid time.
