New Sweden?

Few folks realize that, as I was saing to [livejournal.com profile] joffridus, parts of Southwest New Jersey, Southeast Pennsylvania, Delaware, and even part of Maryland were a colony of Sweden from 1638 to 1655, and an internally autonomous "Swedish Nation" under Dutch rule from 1655 up to the arrival of William Penn in 1681.

The details can be found here, on the site of the Swedish Colonial Society.

I am, I realize more and more, very much a child of the Middle Colonies, born in Philadelphia and educated by Quakers, though in the Midwest, grown up in New Jersey, and a New Yorker now for more than half my life -- of course much of the life of New Jersey in my boyhood was oriented toward New York, though less so than at present.

I guess I have stopped thinking of myself as a Hoosier on the basis of my four undergraduate years in Richmond, though they were a uniquely vivid time.
