? What is this?

Uncle Sam wanted a brochure translated into Krio. Didn't know how to spell the name of the language of Haiti, so got a translation into Creole, a form of Jamaican English. Actually gave it out before they realized their mistake.

This is the much-hyped HUD pamphlet written in the Gullah dialect, yes? I remember all the controversy about this... tempest in a teapot.

Hadn't heard about that one.

Story here seems to be that they wanted Haitian Krio, which we see a lot of in New York, but couldn't spell it.

I may be confusing myself. I must be thinking of this one you refer to, and I am just misremembering.

Does anyone who talks like this, actually write like this?

[identity profile] arisbe.livejournal.com 2004-06-02 08:31 am (UTC)(link)
My first reaction was, No. Then I thought there must be kids growing up in the mountains of Jamaica who were taught to write like this in the government schools, and maybe some of them are adults by now.

Uncle Cecil answers all. He even has another copy of the same booklet.

(And the Eli Edwards happens to be [livejournal.com profile] misseli, my wife.)
