"Not that women themselves are unclean; it is the worship of them as ideals that rots the soul." Uncle Al Crowley in defense of sodomy, quoted by [livejournal.com profile] realimposter.

Ah, the poor man! Was the Victorian ideal of womanhood, at least at the time he wrote this, the only one he had seen? We are truly fortunate to be better situated!

It is my opinion that the worship of any human as an ideal is a good way to burn out quickly and be awash in disappointment. It's called pedastalizing and it is often even less enjoyable for the person on said pedastal than the person creating said pedastal.

Beyond that, imo, AC should have known better.

Southern belles LOVE their "pedestals"

But, Frank, in most of America--the Bible-beating South, the Southwest, out where I am temporarily--the Victorian ideal of womanhood still dominates. But Crowley demonstrates, with this ridiculous statement, that he isn't even a "healthy homosexual."

As may be obvious from that quote, Crowley was bi. The idolization of women remains in much of our culture, dehumanizing both the "whores" who fail to match the image and the "angels" who seem to. I don't know how useful sodomy is as a deprogramming device, but something is called for.

Somehow the idea that a rectal vault is somehow cleaner than a vagina is at least telling. Not to mention that syphilis came into being from men having intercourse with sheep. I think he got the unclean part backward.

Got it backward?

Really!
