You are the Celtic Cross: This cross was first made
out of stone and is often found atop hills, in
front of castles and in graveyards throughout
Ireland and Scotland. The stone was carved with
various symbols including a circle or halo
(representing eternal life) and variations of
the celtic knot.

Of course in the '70s and '80s it became associated with various vampire games and cults and whatnot, which may have been what the person who laughed at you had in mind.
But there was nothing Gothic about the Egyptian idea of life, which the ankh probably should symbolize.

They were lugging a huge wooden cross with them. My son looked at it for a minute, then started pointing and loudly saying "Ankh! Ankh!" and we all about fell down laughing.

saint who hand-wove a cross, out of rushes she
found by the river. She made the cross while
explaining the passion of our Lord to a pagan
man.
