"No one will ever persuade me that the war could not have been ended long ago. The Emperor Karl offered peace. There is the only, honest man who occupied an important position during the war, but he was not listened to. In my opinion his offer ought to have heen acceped. The Emperor Karl has a sincere desire for peace so everybody hates him ... A King of France, yes, a King would have taken pity on our poor people, bled white, attenuated, at the end of their strength. But democracy is without heart, without bowels. a slave of the powers of money, it is pitiless and inhuman."

From an Australian tribute to the Habsburgs.

Emperor Karl ... Was he the successor to Franz Josef?

Yes. The children of Franz Ferdinand were barred from the throne by their mother's comparatively humble birth; this was stipulated at their marriage.

The Vatican named Karl "venerable" not too long ago, and in December approved a miracle attributed to his intercession, paving the way for beatification. Full sainthood requires a second miracle. (The present Pope, whose father was an Imperial officer, was named Karol in his honor.)

Emperor Karl and Empress Zita were featured in a made for cable episode of Young Indiana Jones. Thieir son, Dr. Otto von Habsburg, is considered the father of the European Union.

St. Vincent's Archabbey in Latrobe PA is the headquarters of the American branch of the Emperor Karl League of Prayer (http://www.facweb.stvincent.edu/academics/finearts/gebetsliga/).

Interesting.

I recall that Indiana Jones episode. As well as the ones on German East Africa that got me hooked on German colonial history...

A friend of mine is a theology student at St. Vincent's. I'll ask her about what you mentioned.
