You know, I love the civil right movement and find, despite my want to love to it, that the Old South was economically unsound because of slavery and was doomed to be out-resourced by pretty much everyone, but Lincoln's politics was unabashedly damaging to this country. It was the first great blow to state rights and the seperation of powers, which have been dwindling by both parties (the Democrats since FDR and the Republicans since Nixon).
In many ways, Lincoln was the beginning of the tyranny of democracy Toequeville foresaw.
