The police officer says there are good people at Fellowship Baptist, and the Bible was preached there.

However, "You see, my best friend is a black man," he said. "I wouldn't be comfortable going to a place where I couldn't ask my best friend to go to church with me."

Hardy says he knows there are still a lot of folks who are not comfortable with people from other races, there is still a lot of holdover from the past, there is still a lot of fear.

"But that's not what Christ died for," he said. Jesus' death and resurrection "is supposed to be a uniting force, not a separating thing."
-- Charity Gordon in the Northwest Mississippi Daily Journal, cited by [livejournal.com profile] prester_scott.  The trouble started when a twelve year old child of mixed race accepted Christ, and the church wouldn't accept him.  The pastor, aged 72, quit in disgust.  So did the cop.  Not the kind we too often read about from down there.

A lot of my family lives 'down there'.
There may be strife but believe me,
you don't read about the goodness and
the friendships forged across racial
lines --- because the good stuff doesn't
make news. I live not far from 'down
there'. Where I work, where I live,
is multicultural, multiracial and
multiethnic and reflects true
relationship. Ya'll come!!!!

Not a Defense of This Place, But....

The freedom to associate must also include the freedom

The freedom to associate must also include the freedom <i<not</i> to associate, otherwise it's not a freedom but an obligation.

When I was in the Army I was a Good Christian.

That meant, every Sunday I went to church.

One Sunday I overslept and missed the regular Protestant service, but
there was another one. "Gospel Service" at 10 hundred.

Jesus wanted me in church, so I went.

It was a black service. No white people at all.

Except for one skinny, pious, white boy.

I was ushered in to a back seat, the only one open, by the
back wall.

After the worship service, yes, a very black worship service,
but no, not like the one in the Blues Brothers, the minister
gave a sermon about personal responsibility that has stuck
with me ever since.

"I get people come to me...ah...they say...pastor! I need money...ah...
for my children to eat...ah..."

He suddenly stops and leans on the pulpit and says, in a conversational
voice:

"But you had enough money to buy those fortay faaave dollar jeans
dincha!?"

While we often self segregate, and if thats a choice it
shouldn't be disparaged, its not good if you can't, or profoundly
feel you can't, mingle.

I went to seminary in Jackson Miss. and found to my surprise that professing Christians there did not like Blacks-it was weird hearing Christians express hatred for Blacks. Where was the love of Christ?
