As I understood the article, his law firm expected its members to do some *pro bono* work, and the guys at the firm offered Roberts this case as a way to fulfill his *pro bono* responsibility. My understanding is that he could have said no, and worked on some other *pro bono* case instead. But maybe I'm wrong.
