I bet you didn't know that the present (uncrowned) King of England, Scotland, France, and Ireland, Francis II, was, as a boy of 11, arrested in Hungary and imprisoned in Dachau along with his family after the unsuccessful attempt on Hitler's life.

He is, among other and much more scholarly things, a patron of the Bavarian Dachshund Association, a true lover of those nobe and affectionate companions who contrast so strongly with the wretched beasts kept by the Battenburgs.

Not that anyone is lining up to watch movies about him...

But his birthday does give us some better reason to celebrate July 14.

That fellow whose name I can't spell has been saying some silly things about German history, giving some folks the idea we need to nuke his whole country into the ground. Meanwhile your common garden variety Iranis have decided that the man's a fool and voted accordingly. Will it do any good? Not if the Bushies stick to the idea that all those people are evil and must be destroyed. A wider war may be the only thing that can cover up the disastrous defeat in Iraq, or secure the borders of greater Israel. And maybe it can be stopped if and only if the Democrats want to stop it...
