Two hundred years ago Bonaparte was liberating and enlightening the world, and if this meant enslaving the French, well, C'est la guerre. A century and two later Teddy Roosevelt and his cousin Franklin, Woody Wilson and his Bush league admirers, were acting out their own Napoleonic fantasies, more bland at home if more brutal and barbaric to their subjects far afield. America's latest (if not the last) imperial adventure was the first to invoke the danger of domestic liberty: Our freedom makes us a soft target for terrorism; They hate us because we're free; God hates us because we're free.
