Todd Whitmore, an associate professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, has raised the question of whether the free-market positions adopted by author Michael Novak "constitute formal dissent on Novak's part." "I believe that they do," Whitmore concludes.

The Catholic Worker even wants free-market theories banned from Catholic schools.

AWOL Soldier Seeks CO Status

"Going home on leave in October 2003 provided me with the opportunity to put my thoughts in order and to listen to what my conscience had to say. People would ask me about my war experiences and answering them took me back to all the horrors ­ the firefights, the ambushes, the time I saw a young Iraqi dragged by his shoulders through a pool of his own blood, the time a man was decapitated by our machine gun fire and the time my friend shot a child through the chest.

"Coming home gave me the clarity to see the line between military duty and moral obligation. My feelings against the war dictated that I could no longer be a part of it. Acting upon my principles became incompatible with my role in the military and by putting my weapon down I chose to reassert myself as a human being.

"I know I have made the right decision, and that God has forgiven me already."

Ground Zero to the South Bronx

I am updating this from an office at Eugenio Maria de Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, having been unexpectedly outsourced from my job downtown; evidently there is some poor fellow in India who is able to do it more cheaply than I can, and so he must. Actually, that is pie in the management's sky; for some time to come my former boss will be doing the work of three, or as much of it as will get done at all, and without a great deal of sympathy from me.
