A Bellow From Stage Right

“Dad?!” my teenage daughter’s face reflected a queasy mixture of surprise and instinctive revulsion. “Is it true? Are you really a . . . Republican?”

She uttered the word as if it were a deadly disease that she could catch just by naming it. “I’m a conservative,” I corrected her.

A confessed Neocon, I regret to say, but -- seemingly -- more of a mensch than most of that sect, and, who knows, he might become even more daring later.

I knew you were a "conservative", whatever that term actually means today, but I thought you shyed away from the neocon title.

Yes. I am a Paleocon. Mr. Bellow admits to being a Neo, but I hope he gets over it.

Nice subject line...

So a neocon is someone who doesn't think The Color Purple belongs in the literary canon, and who thinks the US should agressively use covert actions to fight communist or other totalitarian and anti-Captialist movements?

I wonder, what is Mr. Bellow for domestically? Or does he just not like to be told what to think?

That's what I was wondering. I confess I thought the whole thing sounded, well, childish and vacuous: "I don't like you so I'm joining the other side. Mnah!" I wonder what his principles are.

That's the tone I caught too. It's not that I can't sympathize with some of those feelings, but it seems highly irresponsible to base your politics on it.

Mnah!

Yes, a pretentious lot of mental masturbation, amounting to, "the green party poofs make me sick."

Parents exist to embarass their teenagers (I suppose I have 4.5 years to experience this in person :P)
