It was someone studying Egyptian mysticism... they thought that was pretty funny, making the ankh over into a cross. OTOH - when my son was very small and had become accustomed to seeing my friends wearing an ankh and knew what it was, we were standing outside one day when a group of street preachers went walking by. They were lugging a huge wooden cross with them. My son looked at it for a minute, then started pointing and loudly saying "Ankh! Ankh!" and we all about fell down laughing.
